October 20th Harold’s on the Ocean Party for Pam
More Entertainers Than We Can List
As most of you know, Pam McClure of North Myrtle Beach was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in June of 2011. Although Thyroid Cancer isn’t as life threatening as some, it was a wake up call for Pam. It brought to the forefront that Cancer can affect anyone.
Pam started campaigning for the American Cancer Society. and Relay For Life while she was being treated. Pam’s Relay for Life Table was a fixture at Boom Boom’s, Duck’s, HOTO’s and Fat Harold’s. She and a handful of volunteers would sell 50/50 tickets, pass out brochures, and try to educate everyone on the different types of Cancer and how to recognize the symptoms.
Although Pam was pronounced Cancer free in October of 2011 her efforts didn’t cease. Pam organized the Heart of North Myrtle Beach Relay for Life Team. She worked tirelessly throughout the year. Her team was one of the most productive, Pam was the number one fundraiser for our area.
Disaster struck on December 4th when she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Chemo was scheduled for December 26th.
Pam could not stop and would not give up. January 1st 2013 another fundraiser (again for Relay for Life) was scheduled. The NMB Community turned out in support of Pam. Refusing to allow the Cancer treatments to take her hair, she shaved her head. Tears flowed from the hundreds that attended.
Several people attempted to give money directly to Pam instead of Relay for Life. She thanked them but let everyone know that she was getting by. All monies went to the Cancer Society, none to Pam.
To the folks at HOTO’s, Fat Harold’s, and Pam’s friends, her reply was not a surprise. We had all asked if she needed anything. We knew deductibles were high and that she had a lot of added expenses. We had heard many times before, “thanks, but I’m getting by”.
Pam had surgery June 19 to remove both breasts. Radiation was started shortly afterwards. The chemo was rough, the radiation was hell. The doctors had to interrupt the radiation treatments for a week because of the severe burns inflicted.
On August 6th, although not through with the radiation treatments, Pam persuaded her doctors to allow her to return to work. After returning August 7th, she was informed that her job “had been done away with”.
With no job and Cobra Insurance cost being what they are, Pam agreed to let us help. We worked through SOS to raise enough money to pay her insurance costs and a few bills for October.
Joy, with Fat Harold’s and HOTO’s stated that Fat Harold wanted to do something to help Pam. A fundraiser for October 20th is planned. Many entertainers (to be listed later) have volunteered to perform. A raffle, 50/50 drawing, and an auction is planned. Please come out to this event and support this wonderful person. She needs our help.
Thank you.
